Dare to Lead By Brené Brown

Brené Brown is one of my favorite authors. This week I read her brave and honest book for leaders – Dare to Lead. The book has the subtitle ‘Brave Work. Tough Conversations. Whole Hearts’ and is, in its essence, an attempt to redefine good leadership.

See, Brown firmly believes that genuinely great leadership is not defined by status, power, or titles but by something else entirely. According to her, great leaders recognize potential, take responsibility, and are vulnerable, honest, and courageous. Great leaders do not pretend to have all the answers, and they never let their egos get the better of them.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve – not only – their leadership skills but also their interpersonal skills in general. It is truly an amazing book!!

As always, I have pinpointed the essential pieces of wisdom conveyed. There are as follows:

#1 Courage and vulnerability are absolutely essential characteristics if you want to be a great leader

#2 Values are the ideals we use as the guiding stars of our lives. They guide us and give us something to hold on to during dark and difficult times. Strong values push us to do what is right rather than what is easy.

#3 A great leader encourages potential in people and possesses the courage to guide this potential as it develops. One of the critical skills for doing this is the courage and ability to deliver honest and open feedback.

#4 Trust is an essential and multifaceted aspect of our working relationships.

#5 Fear of failure holds us back and stops us from achieving true greatness. Therefore, the ability to fail and recover from it is a critical skill for any great leader to possess.
