Courage is calling By Ryan Holiday

The brave don’t despair. They believe. They are not cynical; they care. They think there is stuff worth dying for – that good and evil exist. They know that life has problems but would rather be part of the solution than a bystander.

Ryan Holiday

This quote comes from the highly motivational book ‘Courage is calling’ by Ryan Holiday. The book explores the idea of bravery and discloses the power of displaying courage. Through inspirational stories and anecdotes about historical and contemporary leaders, Holiday:

– Defines the characteristics of courage,

– Teaches us how to conquer fear,

– And guides us in becoming more courageous (one small step at a time).

A crucial premise is that we live in a world where fear runs rampant! Where people:

– Stand on the sidelines instead of speaking out against injustice,

– Go blindly along with convention instead of forming their own opinions

– And turn a blind eye to the ugly realities of modern life!

And because of this, we need courage more than ever. We need the courage of whistleblowers and risk-takers. We need the courage of activists and adventurers. We need the courage of writers who speak the truth—and the courage of leaders to listen.

By the way, as I was writing this blog post, I realized that this is the 4th book by Ryan Holiday that I have summarized this year. I guess I must really like his work; I hope you will enjoy the summary as well 😊 You can watch it here:

Bittersweet By Susan Cain

Imagine a world without sadness, loss, or suffering where no one is ever in a bad mood. Tears are unheard of. You never wake up at 3:00 a.m. riddled with worry or anxiety about the future. Lovers never leave each other. Loved ones never die.

Immediately, I think we would all agree that this sounds pretty great, but according to bestselling author Susan Cain, it might not be so straightforward!

See, sadness, pain, and loss all play essential roles. Without them, life’s joys would be more mundane. The people you love wouldn’t feel so precious. And moments of happiness wouldn’t feel special at all. Without darkness, you don’t notice the light. If you’ve never tasted bitterness, you can’t recognize sweetness.

This week I read ‘Bittersweet’ by Susan Cain. The book has the subtitle ‘How Sorrow and Longing Make Us Whole’ and is, in its essence, a reflection on how a bittersweet state of mind can help us transcend pain – both on a personal and collective level!

According to Cain, the Bittersweet is a neglected but truly beautiful quality. She defines it as “A tendency to states of longing, nostalgia, and sorrow: an acute awareness of passing time: and a curiously piercing joy at the beauty of the world.”

It’s the understanding that the tragedy of life is inescapably paired with its splendor. It’s compassion, sadness, modesty, hidden suffering and quietness, and the plangent allure of the happy-sad.

We hope you will enjoy this animated summary, where we will walk you through the essential pieces of wisdom conveyed in the book:

‘Reimagining Capitalism’ By Rebecca Henderson

Free market capitalism is one of humanity’s greatest inventions and the greatest source of prosperity the world has ever seen. But this success has been costly. Capitalism is on the verge of destroying the planet and destabilizing society as wealth rushes to the top. The time for action is running short.

This week I read an inspirational book by Rebecca Henderson called ‘Reimagining Capitalism’. The book has the tagline ‘in a world on fire’ and is, in its essence, a guide on how capitalism can help save itself – and the world!

According to Henderson, Reimagining capitalism requires five key actions:

#1 – Creating shared value

#2 – Building the purpose-driven organization

#3 – Re-wiring the financial system

#4 – Building co-operation

#5 Re-Building our institutions and fixing government

None adequate on its own, but each building on the other as a vital part of a reinforced whole.

‘The Obstacle is the way’ by Ryan Holiday.

Ponder this! This thing in front of you. This issue. This obstacle – this frustration, unfortunate, problematic, unexpected problem preventing you from doing what you want to do. That thing you dread or secretly hope will never happen. What if it wasn’t so bad?

This week I read a very inspiring book called ‘The Obstacle is the way’ by Ryan Holiday.

The book teaches us that contrary to popular belief, the obstacles we will inevitably face throughout life should not be seen as mere annoyances or unavoidable irritations but instead as opportunities!! Opportunities to practise virtue, patience, courage, humility, resourcefulness, and creativity. Holiday goes on and argues that obstacles are the driving force of every self-made man and woman across the world – be it on the battlefield or in the boardrooms, across oceans and centuries!

We hope you will enjoy our animated summary, where we will walk you through the essential points conveyed in the book.

Care to Dare by Georg Kohlrieser

Have you ever been led by someone who cared for you like family, and dared you to achieve more than you ever thought possible for yourself, your organization, and even society? I have and I can tell you without hesitation that it felt really great!

This week I read a very lovely book called ‘Care to Dare’ that made me further understand why this type of leadership not only feel goods for everyone involved but can also be of tremendous benefit to the department, company or even the world!

See, the book teaches us how to unleash tremendous leadership potential by building trust, facilitating change, and accelerating focus. A key point in the book is that to obtain sustained high performance in a team; the leader must facilitate a combination of safety and stretch. Put in other words, leaders must install a sense of protection and comfort in the team from which everyone:

– Receives energy,

– Find inspiration to explore,

– Feel safe to take risks

– and uncover the courage to seek new challenges!

They must become ‘Secure Base Leaders’

We hope you will enjoy our animated summary, where we will walk you through the essential points conveyed in the book.
