In the vast universe of mobile gaming, few titles have captured the hearts and minds of players quite like Candy Crush. Me included. I LOVE playing Candy Crush and have recently the crazy milestone of 9000 completed levels.
With its colorful candies, addictive gameplay, and clever use of gamification elements, Candy Crush has become a staple pastime for millions worldwide. But what is it about this seemingly simple game that keeps players coming back for more?
This week I revisited one of my favorite books – Actionable Gamification by Yu-Kai Chou.
In a nutshell, the book presents the reader with a comprehensive framework for integrating elements from traditional game design into various aspects of everyday life and business. It emphasizes the enormous power of designing effective gamified experiences and illustrates how to apply gamification principles to enhance engagement, productivity, and brand loyalty.
In the book Chou introduces the ‘Octalysis framework,’ which comprises eight core elements that influence human behavior:
- Epic Meaning & Calling,
- Development & Accomplishment,
- Empowerment of Creativity & Feedback,
- Ownership & Possession,
- Social Influence & Relatedness,
- Scarcity & Impatience,
- Unpredictability & Curiosity, and finally
- Loss & Avoidance.
Each of these core drives represents a different aspect of human motivation, and effective gamification strategies leverage these drives to create engaging experiences.
