Have you ever heard of ‘The Boston Consulting Group Matrix.’? If not, now’s the time 🥳
Initially introduced in the 1970 article “The Product Portfolio,” the model offers a structured approach to evaluating a company’s product portfolio. In a nutshell, the model is built on the belief that your portfolio composition is a function of the balance between cash flows. High-growth products require cash inputs to grow. Low-growth products should generate excess cash. Both kinds are needed simultaneously.
Divided into four quadrants, the matrix classifies products as follows:
- Cash Cows
- Stars
- Questions Marks
- Dogs
The matrix serves as a strategic tool for portfolio analysis and decision-making. By visually mapping products into these categories, companies can identify where to allocate resources, prioritize investments, and tailor their strategies accordingly.
We hope you will enjoy our animated summary, where we will walk you through the model in greater detail 📚🧠📖💡
