This week I revisited one of my favorite books, ‘What Got You Here Won’t Get You There’ by Marshal Goldsmith. The book has the subtitle ‘How Successful People become even more successful.’
Put in Marshal’s terminology, the book can help you get from “Here” (Where you are now) to “There” (Where you want to go). It is essential to notice that “Here” can be a good place! Many successful people are “Here” because they have already succeeded in life and business, but as Marshal underlines, you can always improve – which is why you should strive to get “There” – “There” can be better.
In this video, I will walk you through Marshal’s take on ’20 Bad Habits shared by many successful people’. See, like all other people; successful people have bad habits! But as these bad habits have not stopped them (as they climbed the ladder of success), it can be tempting to have the flawed logic that these misbehaviors have played an active part in their success!
And if a particular behavior helped us achieve a desired goal, we naturally think we should act the same way again. However, the fact is that our success has probably NOT happened because of this behavior but despite it!
Bottomline: Bad habits keep us from being the best version of ourselves and hence stop our journeys from “Here” to “There.”
I have personally been guilty of displaying habit #2:
: ‘Adding too much value’. Fight the urge to give ‘your two cents’ to every discussion.
And have worked a lot to improve! I do this by, amongst other techniques, remembering the famous quote from Mahatma Gandhi “Speak only if it improves upon the silence.” 😊
