An Everyone Culture by Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey

All corporate organizations, big or small, has a culture. It is defined by it. Corporate culture gives identity to every organization. To be more precise: it is what gives a company its personality.

Like an individual, a culture defines the way how your corporation interacts within itself and to the outside world! This week I read an inspiring book calld ‘An Everyone Culture’. The book explores the concept of company cultures and puts forward the simple but radical theory that organizations will ONLY be able to perform at their best if they create a solid organizational culture in which ‘people development’ is woven into the very core!

See, a primary assumption of ‘An Everyone Culture’ is that an excessive amount of organizational time and energy is wasted because employees are in constant protection mode! They want to look good, stay safe, and avoid vulnerability! Which does indeed keep them somewhat safe, but unfortunately, it also prevents them from performing at their best.

The good news is that some organizations are not only aware of this problem but are actively addressing and correcting it! In these companies, employee development is a ‘need to have’ rather than a ‘nice to have’, and employees are not only encouraged but expected to:

– Bring their vulnerability to work,

– Take responsibility for their development and performance,

– and Build relationships based on trust and respect.

These companies have acknowledged that in order to reach their full potential, they must become “Deliberately Developmental Organizations” (simply referred to as DDOs.)

The Intelligent Investor By Benjamin Graham

This week I read the Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham! First published in 1949, the book is a widely acclaimed classic on value investing. Packed with actionable instructions and sound advice It teaches the reader how to successfully use value investing in the stock market. Historically, the book has been one of the most popular books on investing and Graham’s legacy remains.

A key point graham makes is that Investing well over the long term does not require incredible intelligence or profound insight. Instead, it requires two things:

  • A rational framework for decision making and,
  • The ability to prevent your emotions (and the emotions of others) from overriding your common sense and defined plans.

With these two things in place – combined with patience and discipline – investing successfully is possible for anyone!

Here are some other Things that Matter when investing intelligently.

  • Choice matter. A stock is not just a mere object you trade. It is a piece of ownership in a business. Make sure you understand both the business and the company before investing!
  • Price matters. The more you pay for a stock, the lower your return. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you can buy anytime at any price and still make a profit!
  • Market conditions Matter. The market has constant mood swings. At times, it is over-optimistic, which makes stocks too expensive. At other times, it is pessimistic, which makes stocks cheap. The key is to buy from pessimists and sell to optimists.
  • A “margin of safety” matters — never invest more than you can afford to lose.

Trust me I’m Lying by Ryan Holiday

They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but when I recently picked up this version of Ryan Holiday’s ‘Trust me I’m Lying’ at the library the cover was so dead-boring that I almost couldn’t bring myself to start reading!! Luckily, I have read other books by Ryan Holiday and know that he is an inspiring and honest author with great things to say so I picked it up and started reading nonetheless and I am glad I did since the book is both HONEST, BOLD and thought-provoking.

The book uncovers the secret methods used by Online Marketers, Bloggers, and Professional Media Manipulators! Build on his own experiences; the book explores how ‘good news’ – true or false – travels, distorts, and expands online until it becomes national headlines that generate real-world ‘ripples’.

Ryan Holiday argues that whenever you see a malicious online rumor or Anonymously Sourced Article, someone somewhere is sitting behind the scenes scrupulously pulling the strings!

…And he knows what he is talking about since he used to be one of those people.

At first, Holiday didn’t see any harm in the work he was doing, but at some point, he had no choice but to acknowledge that his manipulations had enormous consequences.

He wrote this book to expose how media manipulators work! In his own words: …I’m tired of a world where trolls hijack debates, marketers help write the news, opinion masquerades as fact, algorithms drive everything to extremes, and no one is accountable for any of it. I’m pulling back the curtain because it’s time the public understands how things really work…”

We hope you will enjoy this video, where we will walk you through the most important highlights conveyed in the book.

Blue Ocean Strategy by W. Chan Kim and Renée A. Mauborgne

I recently watched the TV show ‘Dragon’s den’ and noticed that many of the investors kept referring to an idea “being part of the ‘Red Ocean’”! They did this without further explanation – that is, until the TV show felt the need to put in a small ‘info-box’ explaining what it means. It reminded me of two things:

  1. One of My favorite expressions – ‘The Curse of Knowledge’ – Since Red Ocean is a presumptuous term to use without explaining it and,
  2. That I should really add ‘Blue Ocean Strategy’ to my production list – since this is where the term ‘Red Ocean’ comes from!

And so I did, which is why you can now watch an animated summary of ‘Blue Ocean Strategy’ on the YT channel!!.
