Nudging Explained: The Secret Science of Better Decisions: How small changes in our environment can significantly influence our decisions – often without us even realizing it!
The term “nudge” comes from the book Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness by Cass Sunstein and Richard Thaler. In the book, the authors explain how our choices are shaped by the way they are presented to us—something they call “choice architecture.” Essentially, nudging is about designing environments in a way that encourages better decisions while still preserving freedom of choice.
Think about a supermarket: If healthier foods like fruits and vegetables are placed at eye level while sugary snacks are stored in less convenient spots, people are likelier to choose the healthier option. They are still free to grab a candy bar, but the setup makes the healthier choice easier and more appealing. That’s a nudge!
