NonViolent Communication Explained: How to Communicate with Empathy and Clarity

One of my favourite concepts is Nonviolent Communication (NVC) — a transformative approach to interacting with others that prioritises empathy, clarity, and mutual understanding. Developed by psychologist Dr. Marshall Rosenberg, NVC empowers us to connect more deeply with ourselves and others by focusing on what really matters beneath the surface of our conversations.

I’ve created an animated video on my YouTube channel, BigIdeasGrowingMinds, that breaks down this powerful framework in a way that’s both engaging and easy to follow. Whether you’re encountering NVC for the first time or looking to revisit its core principles, this summary offers a practical and insightful introduction.

In the video, I explore how NVC can help us navigate conflict more constructively, express our needs without blame or criticism, and build stronger, more compassionate relationships — at home, at work, and everywhere in between.

At the heart of Nonviolent Communication are four key components that guide how we communicate:
➡️ Observations – What we see or hear without judgment
➡️ Feelings – How we are emotionally affected
➡️ Needs – The universal human needs behind our feelings
➡️ Requests – Clear, actionable requests to enrich life

As Dr. Rosenberg said,

“When we focus on clarifying what is being observed, felt, and needed rather than on diagnosing and judging, we discover the depth of our own compassion.”

This animation not only outlines the theory behind NVC but also includes practical examples to help you start applying it in everyday situations. It’s a gentle yet powerful tool for transforming the way we communicate and connect.
