People often refrain from voicing their true opinions at work due to fear of potential repercussions, such as negative judgment, backlash, or even job security concerns. Additionally, they may prioritize maintaining harmony or avoiding conflict within the team. However, a direct tone between colleagues is something we should promote and encourage since it fosters clarity and efficiency in communication. Furthermore, it minimizes misunderstandings, reduces the potential for conflicts, and enables a more productive work environment by encouraging straightforward, honest exchanges of information and ideas.
This week, I read a powerful from Kim Scott called ‘Radical Candor’. The book has the subtitle ‘How to Get What You Want by Saying What You Mean’ and is, in its essence, a fresh perspective on leadership and communication.
Through honest anecdotes and insightful observations, Scott draws on her experiences at companies like Google and Apple to provide a framework for building better and more productive relationships at work. She calls it Radical Candor.
Radical Candor is all about Fostering impactful communication and encourages open and honest dialogue. By promoting a culture of Trust, Direct Feedback, Active listening and leading by example Radical candor creates a safe space where team members can voice their opinions, concerns, and ideas without fear of judgment.
