One of the things I love most about my job is the thrill of delving into the pages of a new non-fiction book and unraveling a new concept. As the words on the page come to life, a sense of curiosity and anticipation builds, like embarking on a voyage into uncharted intellectual territory.
This week I read a very refreshing book by Dan Heath called ‘Upstream’. and I have officially incorporated the term ‘Upstream’ into my everyday life. The book has the subtitle ‘How to solve problems before they happen’ and is, in its essence, a guide for preventing problems rather than simply reacting to them.
The book’s central premise is that too often in life, we get stuck in a response cycle. We put out fires. We deal with emergencies. We stay downstream, handling one problem after another, but never go upstream to fix the systems that caused the problems. In ‘Upstream,’ we learn how to change that!
