This week I read a book that has truly stood the test of time. Written more than two thousand years ago ‘The Art of War’ by Sun Tzu is a renowned guide for engaging in conflict and being successful in battle. Through elegant words and thoughtful advice it:
- Details the nature of conflict,
- Reflects on the psychology of leadership,
- and provides strategies for approaching both.
Although his teachings are geared toward actual military conflict, the principles can be applied in all areas of conflict or competition.
One of the critical points in the book is that Strong leadership involves knowing when and how to mobilize when faced with conflict.
Throughout the book, we learn that we:
- Must understand ‘our troops’ and learn how to motivate them in varied circumstances.
- Must be cunning and intelligent in planning our strategy
- and adaptable and capable of allowing the opponent’s actions to guide our decisions.
