One of the best things about my job is that I get to work and collaborate with people from all over the world. A while back I met a cool guy from Australia – @BruceRowse. Bruce runs the Sustainability Education Academy an is – like me – a true believer of continuous learning and sustainable solutions.
Bruce recommended that I read a wise book called ‘Guerrilla Marketing Goes Green’. The book is written by Shel Horowitz and Jay Levinson and offers many golden nuggets on Marketing, Green solutions and ‘why it is always better to ‘do the right thing’’.
The book has the subtitle ‘Winning Strategies to Improve Your Profits and Your Planet’ and is – in a nutshell – a roadmap for companies that want to succeed in a world where integrity and transparency trump slick marketing slogans. A world where high morals, elevated ethics, and commitment to green practices are pivotal for success. A world where environmental priorities have finally infiltrated our hearts and minds and made it to the top of our collective consciousness.
Here is our take on the highlights from the book:
#1 The road to success is paved with integrity and social responsibility.
A key point in the book is that you don’t have to be devious to succeed in business. On the contrary, Levinson and Horowitz argue that social responsibility attracts better employees and more loyal customers.
#2 The road to success is (also) paved with Long lasting relationships.
In order to achieve long-term success, Levinson and Horowitz are adamant that you start treating your customers, employees, business associates, and even competitors as true partners.
#3 The Road to Success is (Furthermore) paved with Focus.
It is a common principle in marketing that you need multiple impressions to move someone from interest to sale! And of course, there is a certain amount of truth in the theory of repetition, but according to Levinson and Horowitz, even a single marketing message – under the right conditions – may be enough to move someone from totally unaware to swiping that credit card.
#4 The Road to Success is (Moreover) paved with Green Initiatives.
When you look at all the advantages of running a green company, it’s hard to understand why every company in the world hasn’t shifted.
- Green goods and services are easier to market.
- They often command a premium price and are thus more profitable.
- Green goods and services are better for the environment.
- And against common belief, they can actually be cheaper to produce if probably designed.
