As a huge fan of continuous growth and life-long learning, I am always looking for new learning opportunities.
One of my personal growth areas is to improve my negotiation skills. After careful reflection I realized that my struggles with negotiations originate from 2 other growth areas; my fear of people not liking me and my apprehension of uncomfortable silences. So, working on my negotiation skills will actually help me improve in 3 growth areas all at once. What’s not to love about that!!
I started my training by reading an amazing book by Chris Voss called “Never Split the Difference”, which is this week’s Big Idea. The book is a guide on how to use hostage negotiation techniques in everyday situations.
Chris Voss is a leading expert on negotiation. He taught international business negotiation at Harvard University and was the lead international kidnapping negotiator for the FBI for four years…
In the book, we learn that the art of negotiation is all about communicating effectively. Chris Voss demonstrates how good negotiation skills are relevant in every part of life—When closing a business deal, getting a good price for a new car, or persuading your children to go to bed.
I highly recommend reading the book. Besides all the good tips on how to “win at negotiation”, it is filled with amazing real-life stories from the author’s experience as lead negotiator for the FBI, which makes it a real page-turner.
